"If the U.S. wants to better understand the ethics and governance of AI, it should look no further than its cities, where officials are forging their own guidelines for GenAI usage." - Jody Oetzel, Research Associate, Notre Dame-IBM Technology Ethics Lab

Jody Oetzel, a research associate at the Notre Dame-IBM Technology Ethics Lab, recently published an article in Tech Policy Press on the role of cities and local governments in developing responsible artificial intelligence policy. Oetzel’s research focuses on the way cities and local governments approach emerging technologies.

The article, titled “Cities Can Lead the Conversation on Responsible AI Use by Governments” and cowritten with Christopher Jordan of the National League of Cities, argues that cities in the U.S. can take a leading role in developing responsible AI policy by working together and sharing information, building tools and resources that can be adapted by other cities, and convening diverse groups of officials, researchers, and stakeholders to develop best practices for approaching AI.
