We are pleased to share that professor of the practice and founding director of the Notre Dame-Technology Ethics Lab, Elizabeth M. Renieris, has been appointed a Senior Research Associate at the Institute for Ethics in AI at the University of Oxford. In her capacity as a Senior Research Associate, Professor Renieris’ research will focus on the complex ethical challenges raised by digital identity systems and solutions that incorporate artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies, as well as the need for improved governance frameworks for these systems.

Professor Renieris said:

“As the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the roll-out of AI-enabled digital identity systems and solutions worldwide, their ethical challenges are quickly outpacing technological ones. I am delighted to be joining Oxford’s Institute for the Ethics in AI at this pivotal time to research the ethical implications of AI-enabled digital ID. The Institute uniquely bridges the divide between science and the humanities and offers a level of academic rigor and research excellence that is unparalleled in the world.”

The Institute for Ethics in AI launched in February 2021, and aims to convene philosophers, humanities scholars, technologists, and users to research the ethics and governance of artificial intelligence. Led by Dr. John Tasioulas, the Institute is part of the Faculty of Philosophy and based in the Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities at the University of Oxford. Professor Renieris was named alongside three other Senior Research Associates: Jeremias Adams-Prassl (University of Oxford), Teresa Bejan (University of Oxford), and Daniel Susskind (King’s College London).
