Auditing AI Initiative

the words

During the 2022–23 academic year, the Notre Dame-IBM Tech Ethics Lab will pursue an Auditing AI Initiative aimed at providing both those who already work in tech and students who will soon join them with the tools to assess artificial intelligence systems for fairness, reliability, and other related issues.

The initiative will feature both education and research components.

Education

The Lab plans to 1) develop an undergraduate course regarding how to conduct an ethics audit of artificial intelligence, 2) develop teaching materials, including teaching cases and libraries for general use, and 3) create video tutorials, toolkits, and best practices for public and practitioner use based on that course.

Research

Each year, the Lab releases a Call for Proposals (CFP) for the purpose of funding practical and applied interdisciplinary research in tech ethics.

The focus of the 2023 CFP is “Auditing AI.” Information about the 19 award winners is available at techethicslab.nd.edu/call-for-proposals. Final deliverables—e.g., training modules, proof-of-concept-tools, audit frameworks, etc.—will be accessible through the Lab’s website after they have been completed.
